Decommissioning of UDUS Dial-up Service
UDUS is the UNSW 56k modem dial-up service that has provided connectivity to UNSW staff and students since 1996.
UDUS dial-up has been successful over a long period providing high quality, highly available connectivity. Unfortunately usage of UDUS dial-up has been in steady decline since the introduction of cost effective broadband and the demand for higher speed connections by home users.
UNSW has no reasonable alternative to broadband procured from service providers as this technology requires a point of presence in each local telephone exchange. The cost of providing UDUS dial-up has continued to remain steady, while the number of users has diminished to a very small number. Additionally, the infrastructure providing the service is no longer supported by the vendor. For these reasons, IT at UNSW will be decommissioning the UDUS dial-up Service.
Any users currently using the UDUS dial-up service will need to organise a connection to a local service provider (ISP) available in their area for personal use.
Any user who has funds remaining in their UDUS account, can contact the Service Desk to request a refund.
Staff can request, through a Request for Works and Services (RWS) form, an Optus Wireless card for business use. The Optus Wireless card will provide, at a minimum, dial-up speeds wirelessly to 98% of Australian households, and broadband speeds for 80% of the Australian population. The Optus Wireless card, on a 2 year contract, has no up-front charge with the standard UNSW plan of 3Gbps per month costing $29.99. Each Faculty and Division has representatives who can access the RWS system to request services and these Optus Wireless Cards can continue to be charged to organisational units.
